To MacBook or Not to MacBook?

Published by Donna under love, techie

In exactly a month, I’m going under the knife again. This time around, the doc says it’s a 4-week recovery period. I already turned in my leave slip and I’m psyching myself up for the procedure.

During my afternoon walk with Hubby, I mused about what I should do during those 30 days of R&R.

“Maybe you should set up a wireless connection and buy a laptop so you can surf the web from bed?” he offered.

“A MacBook?” I quickly sought clarification.

“Yeah,” he said and he went on to convince me of why I should get one. Now that’s a switch.

If we get a MacBook, it’ll probably be a 13″ for maximum portability and affordability. I’m still undecided about the purchase. After all, we already have a kick-butt 24″ iMac and a Dell which is still in top shape. Do we really need another computer? What do you think?

WP 2.1

Published by Donna under techie

WordPress 2.1 is wonderful, especially when you apply a Theme that actually works.

Today, in a fit of frustration over my Blogroll suddenly disappearing from my page, I decided to give in and get a new, WP 2.1-compatible theme for champuru.net. And boy, am I glad I did.

I discovered fun, exciting features like Sidebar Widgets. Oh, the geeky glee!

I also jumped on the MyBlogLog bandwagon at the same time. Tweaking widgets and what-nots is how I spent part of my afternoon as I recovered from this nasty pill-induced fatigue I’ve been fighting recently. I don’t know if this tiredness is really caused by the pill, but I have to blame something, right?

It’s 10:00 and if I head to bed right now, I might be able to grab 8 hours of sleep before another Manic Monday begins.

First Works

I spent the past few days here at the Olelo Television Studios sequestered in an Edit Bay, becoming intimately familiar with Final Cut Pro 5 and having the time of my life editing footage from last Friday’s formal military retirement ceremony that I shot.

This ambitious endeavor is considered my “first works” — which is basically my required project to be recognized as a “certified producer” by Olelo. Mind you, the minimum runtime for a first works is 3 minutes. I only exceeded that by 72 minutes. You know me, always extreme.

As a perfectionist, I am not completely pleased with the end result. My inexperience with the camera is obvious and picking up a defective tripod didn’t help matters either. One of the locks on the tripod was stripped, so the camera kept drifting to one side. I ended up holding the camera in place for the entire 90 minutes of shooting which did not make me a happy camper. I also learned (after the fact) that when you are doing a LOT of zooming, it’s better to use the zoom rocker instead of the zoom ring: it’s a smooth “zooooooooooom” versus “zooom… zoooom…. zoooom.” Ugh.

Oh, and not to mention, I ran out of tape. The ceremony was supposed to be well under 75 minutes, so I had 80 minutes of tape. I should know never to cut it so close — and always prepare for the worst-case scenario, which in this case was a ceremony that ended up running close to 90-minutes. I ended up trying to preserve tape near the end, so I missed some important footage. Luckily, the second cam captured enough of the action, but the audio, of course, was not up to par on those segments. Another life lesson.

Of course, it’s all a learning experience. It’s just too bad that this particular project is my first. This video will undoubtedly be a keepsake for the retiree and his family, I just wish I could have done a more professional-looking job. But heck, it’s free — and you get what you pay for.

With all that said, I was very happy with the editing since I managed to integrate some footage from a second Mini-DV camera that took reaction shots, different camera angles, and closeups that I wasn’t able to get. The audio also seemed pretty decent, too. Using an audio set up that was a little more complicated than I had intended certainly paid off in the end. (We used a mixer, a 100-ft. cable to the sound board, a second 100-ft. cable connected to a shotgun mic for the band, and the on-board mic on the camera.)

For better or for worse, I submitted my show for airing on Olelo. I’m not sure how many people will actually sit around to watch all 75-minutes of it, but maybe it’s better if they don’t anyway — for my sake. ;)

FOOTNOTE: This experience has piqued my interest and creativity and makes me want to attempt to write/direct/shoot/edit my own special. On what? I don’t know. Maybe a feature on “Hawaii’s Bloggers”? Share your ideas! Want to be on TV? Drop me a line! Come on, indulge your inner idol!

iDog

iDog
Say hello the newest member to the Champuru family!

Serendipity! A belated Christmas present from Arnold: a Sharper Image iDog! There’s something about receiving a bit of gadgety fun that just makes me smile, especially when it comes packaged in such cuteness.

I recorded a video of him dancing to Weird Al’s “White and Nerdy” earlier, but thought it might be just a bit trite to post that as a vlog entry. (As if my other vlog entries weren’t “trite”.)

Help me name my iDog. Any suggestions? Leave me a comment or e-mail me at donna -at- this domain. Woof!

24″ thing of beauty

Published by Donna under techie

About midday, a text message arrived on my wireless phone: FedEx delivered [...] HI, US 11:39 AM.

The iMac had arrived.

A busy evening of work-related shopping was ahead, so I picked up the Hubs and left the iMac in its original brown box, undisturbed. When we got back, Hubby helped me do a musical chairs act with the computers in the den. His computer, an old Dell would be given to a friend. My Dell would be passed down to the Hubby. (”I always get the hand-me-downs,” he says. In this case, it’s not a bad deal. The computer is still performing in top shape, a P4 3GHz Dell with 1 GB of RAM. Albeit, still prone to its typical Windoze flakiness periodically.) After we dealt with the tangle of cables and dust bunnies under the desk and got the PC’s situated, we unveiled the iMac.

iMac

The 24″ screen is HUGE! Also, since it’s white, it’s a stark contrast to the black office furniture that I have — unlike the PC that completely blended in. Not that I’m complaining, no… because the iMac is so aeshetically pleasing that it almost becomes a centerpiece for the room.

Now, I just have to learn how to use it.

So far, I’ve downloaded the IM app Adium and a neat tool for Flickr: 1001. After I do my homework, I will allow myself the diversion and go through Richie’s consummate list of must-have Mac applications. A world of coolness yet to discover — I’m so excited! Thanks, Derek and Richie for helping make my transition a little smoother!

It’s in the Mail

Published by Donna under techie

Holy cow. Apple is good. Darned good, I’d say.

One week ahead of schedule, I received my notification that my iMac is being shipped via FedEx. I may have my new toy in my hot little hands by the end of the week, if I’m lucky!

Talk about great news after a very long and trying day contending with work and school. Tomorrow promises to be another toughie at the office, but I should be able to face it with a little more pep in my step.

Decided

Published by Donna under techie

A 24″ iMac has my name on it. :)

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I especially like Rod’s point: “It’s easier to add more RAM than it is to add more screen.”

Ship date: 9/18/2006. Expected delivery: 09/21/2006.

Good things come to those who wait.
