Growing Like Weeds

Spidey

Tonight we celebrated the birthdays of two of Hubby’s nephews: Ryan and Linkin. It’s hard to believe that Ryan is already 19 — and Linkin is now 3 years old! You can certainly see the passage of time when you stop to notice how quickly the kids have grown, right before your eyes.

Ryan was only 5 years old when Hubby and I started dating. Now he’s a young man!

I guess we better start thinking about trying to have kids soon — at least before Linkin turns 19! Egads.

As a side note, I love this photo of Linkin. Clad in his Spidey suit, muscles included, his face became serious as if telling us that he would not take his superhero duties lightly. At 3, he understands “with great power comes great responsibility.”

When did Halloween costumes get to be so elaborate? Complete with muscles and sound effect-emitting gloves, he makes a very convincing Spider-man. Heck, when I was a kid I had a plastic mask that made me feel like I was suffocating and an ill-fitting, glorified garbage bag to wear for Trick-or-Treating. (The only costume that I actually remember was “Woody Woodpecker.”) My, how times have changed.

A Matter of Trust

Published by Donna under ohana, spirit

I’ve been pondering aging quite a bit lately.

Mom has been tolerating her chemotherapy well. Thus far, she has not suffered any chemo-induced nausea; although it has been noted that her blood count was low on a few visits which prevented her from receiving the treatment. Normally, they will postpone her IV another week so that her blood count can return to a more desirable level before administering another treatment. Also, her feet and ankles have been swollen. She will be going for an ultrasound next week to ensure that it is not caused by blood clots.

Although Mom looks great and I can barely believe that she’s undergoing cancer treatment, these two developments do concern me. After all, Mom will be 74 next month and I can only imagine the havoc that cancer and chemotherapy can wreak upon the body.

Being the only child, it’s extremely difficult for me to come to grips with the fact that my parents are aging. Continue Reading »

Back from Lanai

Lanai High and Elementary School

The air seems cleaner, the people smile brighter and life moves slower, much slower, on Lana`i.

No traffic. Heck, not even a single traffic light exists on the entire island to delay your commute along the 1-mile stretch called Lanai City. It was pure bliss.

Although this was my third trip to my father’s hometown in the past few years, this had been the most significant. You see, my father is an alumnus of Lanai High & Elementary School, class of 1955. Graduates gathered to celebrate their 50th class reunion, most appropriately held in their hometown where memories and friendships were rekindled. Continue Reading »

A Kinder, Gentler Time

I have been working on a slideshow as a favor to my Father who will be celebrating his 50th class reunion on Lana`i in a couple of weeks. The old black and white photographs make me nostalgic for a time that was before mine, when no one locked their doors and you knew everyone in your little neighborhood.

My Dad has fond memories of his years on Lana`i. Tales of hunting and fishing, camping on the beach under the moonlight, and hot summer days picking pineapples.

Seeing Dad’s youthful face with his shy smile made me realize the passage of time. I bet he never thought 50 years would go by so quickly.
