From poke to poke

Published by Donna under conception / pregnancy

I have a feeling this is going to be a rollercoaster ride until then end. I’m living from poke to poke — 4 times a day, I poke my finger to draw my blood for the glucose test, holding my breath while the monitor counts down and ultimately displays the number of the moment.

This morning’s fasting number was fine: 82 which is under my target value of 90.

However, my post-breakfast test registered me at 172 — a whole 52 points above the target of 120. Now that can’t be good. This was after two failed attempts to take the test. The first time, I didn’t get enough blood on the test stick. The second time, I think my finger was too sweaty. Unfortunately, the third time was not the charm I had been hoping for.

For lunch, I just ate a Glucerna meal replacement bar. It’s 32 grams of carbs and I’m allowed 60 grams for lunch. Surely, my glucose levels should be lower, right? We’ll see in two hours.

Until the next poke…

Sweeter Choice

Published by Donna under conception / pregnancy

Today I went to the Kapiolani Medical Center for the Sweeter Choice program, designed for expectant mothers diagnosed with gestational diabetes (GD). We met in a small conference room adjacent to the hospital cafeteria where we learned the basics about gestational diabetes (what causes it, potential risks to the baby if left unchecked, and how to manage it), how to monitor our blood sugar levels, and a dietitian explained all about portion sizes and healthy eating.

They gave us each a blood glucose monitoring system (OneTouch Ultra) and showed us how to use it. They also had us each take turns doing a test with the nurse observing closely to ensure that we could perform it properly to get accurate results. A few women were very hesitant to do the needle poke, but since going through IVF and being poked everyday for months on end with much bigger needles than that, it didn’t phase me at all. My blood glucose measured at 78 — but that was about four hours after my last meal, so it wasn’t a good indication of my levels.
A few interesting things that I learned:

  • Brown rice and white rice are the same when counting carbs. The same goes for whole wheat bread versus white bread. DOH! I thought eating brown rice and whole wheat bread would at least be slightly better for me than the refined stuff. I mean, it is better for my health, but just doesn’t give me any advantage when counting carbs.
  • I don’t have to eat sugar-free everything — I just have to be mindful of portion control. In other words, I can still eat a Big Mac, I just need to skip the fries. (Not that Big Macs are highly recommended, but I’m just using it as an example.) Also, I don’t have to give up my ice cream! I just have to make it fit within my carb allowance.
  • Brown drinks are bad because of the phosphoric acid. There goes my hopes of drinking diet Mug Root Beer to curb my carb cravings.
  • You must eat a snack two hours after every meal (after you test). Yay for not having to starve myself between meals!

They also fed us a hearty lunch to end the class: meatloaf with mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli, salad with French dressing, assorted fruits, sugar-free jell-o, and a small carton of milk. It was more food than I could eat, but the instructor said that it was a good example of a healthy meal within our GD guidelines.

Two hours later, I took my first reading and it was a bit high at 134. It’s supposed to be less than 120. Tonight, two hours after dinner, I took my evening reading: 123. Better, but still higher than it should be. I have a feeling that this isn’t going to be easy. I just hope I can manage the GD with diet and exercise and that I won’t have to go on medication.

Since they recommended keeping a food/exercise diary, I figure that I might as well use my blog to help me keep track. At least it will prompt me to blog daily.

Breakfast: Special K with Strawberries cereal with milk
Lunch: Meatloaf with mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli, salad with French dressing, assorted fruits, sugar-free jell-o
Snack: Glucerna mini snack bar
Dinner: 2 pieces of shoyu chicken, brown rice, salad, a small serving of salsa and tortilla chips
Dessert: Sugar-free jell-o
Late night snack: Glucerna mini snack bar

Exercise: 2 mile walk, 5:30 - 6:15 pm

Blood Sugar Tests:
(Guideline is less than 90 fasting and 120 after meals)
Fasting: none
Breakfast: 78 (not accurate, taken 4 hours after eating)
Lunch: 134 (high)
Dinner: 123 (high)

Week 33 - 49 days until my due date!

33 weeks and 5 days

33 weeks and 5 days
33 weeks and 5 days

This afternoon, I went to the Fetal Diagnostic Center at the Kapiolani Medical Center for my first appointment with the Sweeter Choice program for expectant mothers diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

They asked me a few fundamental medical questions, took a measurement of my tummy, listened to my heart rate and lungs, and used the Doppler monitor to listen to the fetal heartbeat. The doctor then proceeded to educate me about gestational diabetes: what it is, potential complications for the baby if not managed properly, and my increased risk of developing Type II diabetes in the future.

So far, according to the measurements, the baby looks like a normal size — so they didn’t order an ultrasound. The fetal heartbeat was strong and they’re still pleased with my blood pressure and weight gain thus far. The next step is taking the class on Wednesday which will teach me about proper diet and exercise as well as how to monitor my blood sugar levels.

All in all, a good check-up. I’m looking forward to the class on Wednesday, then another appointment with my OB doc on Friday.

Today’s stats:
Blood Pressure: 104/59
Weight gain so far: 16 pounds (but the nurse didn’t let me remove my tennis shoes, so I’m going to say 15!)

Maternity Photo Session

Published by Donna under conception / pregnancy

Photo by Lisa Hoang, Windwardskies Photography

On Saturday, Hubby and I had the pleasure of doing a maternity photo shoot with the awesomely talented Lisa Hoang of Windwardskies Photography. I’ve been admiring her work for years, so I was very excited to have the opportunity to have her capture this special time in our lives.

In all likelihood, Baby Champuru will be an only child. She is our miracle baby, the product of many prayers and the grace of God. We had to go through in vitro fertilization to conceive her and the process is not only an emotional rollercoaster, but it is also extremely costly — with no guarantees. We are so grateful that the Lord blessed us with this baby and having a beautiful set of photographs to look back on will be a keepsake that we cherish forever.

Being a photog myself, albeit still quite an amateur at that, I am much more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it. However, Lisa has such an encouraging spirit that simply puts you at ease. In my opinion, a photographer can be extremely talented in a technical sense, but it’s wasted if he/she can’t bring out the emotions and expressions of the subjects. It’s the friendly factor that you either have or you don’t. Lisa definitely has it. She made the session fun and enjoyable and I’m sure it will show in the photos that result.

Before we know it, it’ll be time for her to do our newborn photo shoot! OH MY! :)

If you’re looking for a photographer, be sure to contact Lisa Hoang. She is definitely one of the best photographers on the island.

Week 31 check-up

Published by Donna under conception / pregnancy

I’m seeing the OB/GYN every two weeks now. My last appointment was on Friday, which marked 31 weeks and 2 days. Aside from the gestational diabetes, everything else looks good. According to the doc, the baby’s heartbeat is strong, measurements are right on track, and my weight and blood pressure are good.

Blood Pressure: 90/50 (this seemed insanely low — even for me, but the doc didn’t say anything about it.)
Weight gain so far: 14 pounds

In other news, my belly button has started to change shape significantly this week. It now resembles a crater and I just noticed that the outline of the rim of my belly button is sometimes visible if I’m wearing a thin cotton shirt. I asked Hubby if I should put a band-aid on it since they don’t make bras for protruding belly buttons. He thought I was joking. I’m so not joking. I just may develop an outie yet.

Jonesing for Carbs

Published by Donna under conception / pregnancy

It’s only been three days since I discovered that I have gestational diabetes and I’m already jonesing for a fix of carbs.

Tonight, we celebrated my father-in-law’s birthday at Kyoto Ohsho. The worst part of dealing with gestational diabetes is going out to eat at a restaurant and being surrounded by everyone else’s scrumptious carb-loaded dishes and decadent desserts and not being able to partake and enjoy, too. Forgoing the sushi and tempura wasn’t too bad, but having to decline dessert made me feel deprived. And seeing that evil chocolate fountain flowing across the room was just killing me.

I resisted getting the dessert bar add-on for $3.80 more, but stopped by the McDonald’s drive-thru for a vanilla ice cream cone on the way home. Hey, it’s only 24 grams of carbs. (Better than an M&M McFlurry, which is 96 grams of carbs!)

I’m convinced that carbs makes me happy. And conversely, lack of carbs makes me fussy as all heck.

Milestone: Only 60 days to go until my due date (Sept. 24)!

I’m posting my daily diet and exercise stats at our group health and fitness blog at http://health.champuru.net.

Black Belt Baby

Published by Donna under conception / pregnancy

Lately, I’ve been feeling Baby Champuru moving in the womb quite a bit. It’s an odd feeling, but reassuring at the same time.

Sometimes my tummy twitches or something hard (like her head?) pokes out of the side of my stomach. But more often than not, it’s a quick snap kick to remind me that she’s there or a rolling motion as if she were moving to get into a more comfortable position.

It’s not fun when she gets upset, however. On the morning I took my glucose tolerance test, I drank a whole bottle (100 grams) of glucola for the second day in a row. (Read the entry entitled Failed Attempt and you will understand why.) Soon after downing the sugary drink, she started kicking me, hard, in the groin. Yes, it is as uncomfortable as it sounds and it startles me every time.

My little snowflake, be nice to mommy… she’s giving up ice cream and chocolates for you.

Sometimes I really think Baby Champuru is training to be a black belt in Karate in there — and more often than not, using my bladder as a punching bag. This inevitably causes me to make a beeline to the nearest restroom.

Yep, she’s kicking butt and taking names and the first one on her list is mine.
