Lil' K riding her "run bike"
For Christmas this year, we bought Lil’ K her first bicycle. *sniff* Another milestone!
Yes, I realize that she is only two years old (26 months) but this is no ordinary bicycle, it’s a “run bike.” The bike has two wheels, but no chain or pedals. Designed to fit 2-1/2 to 5 year olds, it is supposed to help young children learn balance, steering, coordination, and motor skills more effectively than a bicycle equipped with training wheels.
We purchased the Adams Run Bike and her cute Giro bike helmet at Bikewerx, Hubby’s favorite store in the Mililani Town Center. We also tried the Skuut Wooden Balance Bike, but the standover was too high — even when inverting the center board (which brings the seat down an inch or two). Lil’ K could sit on the Skuut, but she wasn’t comfortable riding it as she was with the Adams Run Bike. I think she was also more enchanted by the pretty pink paint on the run bike, as opposed to the Skuut which is the natural wood color. Personally, I liked the Skuut a lot, but we had to go with what Lil’ K was most comfortable with. After all, if she isn’t comfortable with it, she won’t ride it.
One thing that we preferred on the Skuut over the Adams was that the Skuut’s design limits the range of motion on the handlebars. The handlebars on the Adams Run Bike can spin 360º. I suppose this only becomes problematic if your toddler likes to go super fast and steer wildly. Right now, Lil’ K is still getting accustomed to it and she can walk faster than she can “ride” her run bike, so the free turning handlebars don’t concern me. Yet.
So far, she is really enjoying having her very own bicycle. It makes her feel like a big girl. She has always been fascinated by Hubby’s mountain bike and with the frequency at which we visit Bikewerx, she is very familiar with bikes. Surprisingly enough, I think she loves her helmet almost more than the bike itself. I suppose with the pretty pink designs, what little girl can resist?
When did your child get his/her first bicycle? Have you tried a run bike/balance bike?

Who is Champuru?
Aloha, I'm Donna, known everywhere on the Internet as "Champuru." I was born and raised in Hawaii. I'm a Christian. I'm married to my best friend of 18 years, we struggled with infertility and successfully conceived via IVF (and by the grace of God!) in 2008. I resigned from my coveted "secure" government job to be a work-at-home mom to my 3-year-old daughter. Using my degree in Information Technology and the skills obtained in the marketplace, I started my own business. Now, I work from home, taking clients on a part-time basis, working in my PJ's while the little one sleeps. Life isn't always easy, but it's all good.

Don’t know how I missed this post. I see it’s dated Dec 31!
What a cute bike. Looks like it will give Lil K a lot of exercise too.
My first bike was a two-wheeler. I remember it was a Huffy brand but I don’t remember learning to ride a two wheeler. The story my mother tells me is that she was sitting on the front porch of the house when she saw me zip by on a two-wheel bike. Neither my mother nor father even knew I could ride a bike. I was about four at the time and Mom says the neighborhood kids must have taught me to ride. So they bought me a bicycle. I had that bike all the way through junior high when someone decided they needed it more and it disappeared right out of our garage.
