Bon dance season is upon us again and we kick off the summer this weekend at the Waipahu Plantation Village. I hope to do a better job of capturing the bon dances in photos and video this year, but keeping an eye on a toddler while wielding a camera is no easy feat — so no promises.
Hope to see you at the bon dances, the schedule for Hawaii (all islands) is below. Be sure to say “hi” if you see us!

I really am looking forward to seeing your pics! We just don’t get that many options to see or participate in Seattle.
Thanks for your fabulous 2010 Bon Dance Schedule! I would like to add a bon dance for Oahu. The Jodo Mission of Hawaii Bon Dance will be held on August 20 and 21.
Thank you for Bon Dance Schedule. I was looking for this.
Also, please add… PACIFIC BEACH HOTEL has Natsu-Matsuri & Bon Dance, 7/16~8/28 Every Friday & Saturday 5:30pm to 9pm. See their Website for more info.
thanks for publishing the obon schedule for this year! i have one question however. i notice in your profile that you note, quite prominently, that you are a Christian. How does celebrating Obon, a Buddhist cultural event reconcile with your Christian pursuit?
@xxxboy: Aloha and thanks for taking the time to comment.
That’s a very good question and one that I struggled with for years. In fact, I avoided attending bon dances for a long time, until I decided to phone my pastor (at the time) and ask for his opinion about whether it’s acceptable for a Christian to attend bon dances. He explained that if I was motivated to attend from a cultural and community standpoint that it would be acceptable — and that even he enjoyed attending bon dances. I was very active in the Okinawan performing arts community (pursued traditional Okinawan dance, taiko, and sanshin — although currently on hiatus). Bon dances provided me an opportunity to enjoy the music and dancing of my Okinawan culture.
I was a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and lived in Olaa in 1959-1960. One of my greatest opportunities was to enjoy the services in the Hongwanji Buddhist Temple and having the opportunity to share our beliefs with the Buddhist Priests. I have also attended the Bon Festivals and love the Japanese Culture.
I seen no conflict by my attending a buddhist service nor enjoying a Bon Festival.
My live is better for that experience!
I also enjoyed the Obaki(ghost) and Samurai movies-all in Japanes (English sub-titles).
The Buddhist Priests and the people helped me learn the Japanese language as well. I love the people and their culture.
Would it not be worthwhile to rid ourselves of the stigma of avoiding experiencing others culture?
Your response is welcomed. 2-22-11
Is it possible to get a picture of the temple in Olaa? Couldn’t find on the web.
