Who is Champuru?

Aloha, I'm Donna, known everywhere on the Internet as "Champuru." I'm a Christian, blissfully wedded to my perfect match (the yang to my yin) of 15 years and a stay-at-home mom to my miracle baby, born in October 2008. Living life in Hawaii, less than 5 miles from my hometown, seeking balance in her pursuit of family, faith, recreation, and rest. Read more on the About page.

Sandwich Generation

3 generations

Mom, me, and Baby Champuru

The Sandwich Generation is a generation of people who care for their aging parents while supporting their own children.

Wikipedia, “Sandwich Generation”

My mom is in the hospital right now.  At 2:30 pm yesterday, she went to the doctor for cold symptoms that persisted longer than a week. They discovered that her oxygen level was low, so the doctor advised her to go to the emergency room for further tests.  It may be related to her heart.  After hours of waiting, just before 9:00 pm, my dad called me to let me know that they were admitting her to the hospital for observation.  I’ll go to the hospital tomorrow to see how she’s doing and to get the full prognosis from her doctor.  My parents never seem to give me the entire story.

The sad truth that I hate to face is that my parents are aging.  My mother will be 78 this year and my father is 75.  I love them to pieces and it breaks my heart to see them slowing down. Ever since childhood, I promised them that I would care for them in their old age. I have every intention of keeping that promise.

But, here I am: the mother to an infant, and daughter to elderly parents.  I am blessed that my parents have been in relatively good health.  Mom has had her share of health issues (battled breast cancer twice, two micro-strokes, and the installation of a pacemaker), but she has always been a trooper and faced it with strength and an attitude of “it’s really not so bad, I’ll be fine.” Lately, however, she has been commenting about how old, tired, and weak she is.  “I’m an old lady now,” is a phrase I hear pass her lips far too often these days.  I am praying that she can power through this current challenge like she has in the past.

If you’re the praying type, I’d love it if you would remember my mom in your prayers today.

As before, you can definitely count on my prayers for your mom (and your dad, who certainly is going through his own struggle with this). Of course, I will include you too! Keep us updated and I will be sending positive thoughts your way!

Donna, lots of love and prayers to you and the family. You and Joy-c are always a good inspiration to me. Your parents are so lucky to have a great daughter and I’m sure they know it. Take care

  • I just read your post about your mom. I hope she is doing better. I will keep her and your father in my prayers. May God give you peace and strength to deal with this season of life.

  • I’m thinking and praying for your mom and for you. *hugs*
