Baby Foodie: Asparagus Pureé

asparagus

More greens needed to be introduced into Baby Champuru’s diet, so I made asparagus pureé today.  This is another quick and simple recipe for baby food:

  • Soak asparagus in a produce wash (such as Bio Kleen Produce Wash) for about 5 minutes and rinse thoroughly.  I’m particularly concerned about residual pesticides on produce that won’t be peeled prior to preparation, such as asparagus, and whenever possible, I buy organic.  (But even organic produce should be washed thoroughly.)
  • Snap of woody ends by bending the stalk at the natural breaking point (where the color changes), usually about 1-2″ from the base.
  • Steam for 7-9 minutes in a steamer basket. Reserving the cooking water is not necessary.
  • Pureé in a food processor. Adding water is not necessary, as the asparagus will be quite loose when pureéd.
  • Freeze or refrigerate. Freeze in covered ice cube trays, baby food trays, or Baby Cubes then store in freezer Ziploc bags for up to 3 months.  Or refrigerate in an air-tight container for up to 3 days.

When serving to baby, see if baby will eat it as is.  If not, you may stir in some applesauce or pears to make it more pleasing to baby’s palate.

But as you can see, Baby Champuru loved it – plain and simple!
