October is only four months away, which means time is short for planning Baby Champuru’s first birthday party. Mind you, the party will be small-ish, as our venue limits our guest list to a maximum of 68 attendees. In spite of the size of the party, there is still planning and preparations to be done. In the midst of all of that, it seems that the issue that has been on my mind lately is whether to allow Baby Champuru to have a piece of her birthday cake at the party.
I know, in the scheme of things, that’s a small concern — but I have a habit of making mountains out of molehills. So, let’s tackle this molehill, shall we?
When I searched the phrase “baby eating cake” on Google and Flickr, there are thousands of images of babies enjoying sugary mouthfulls of birthday cake, so obviously, everyone else does it. I obsess about what she eats, feeding her organic, homemade food as much as possible, and have fits just thinking about allowing her to eat anything with excessive amounts of sugar or salt in it. A Costco cake, albeit super yummy, is not the healthiest thing to eat. And if I do relent and let her have a piece, will she be jonesing for sugar fixes after that? Does that then open the door to other unhealthy snacks such as candy, cookies, and soda?
Call me a party-pooper. Perhaps I’m just being paranoid or overprotective. Maybe I will allow her the teeny-tiniest piece of cake to enjoy with everyone else. After all, I suspect that even my most valiant efforts to keep her from the cake will be thwarted by well-meaning cousins who will gladly give her a piece of theirs.
So, tell me: did you let your babies have their cake and eat it, too, on their first birthday?
