Babywearing has been practiced for centuries all around the world and in recent years has been gaining popularity in America as well. There are many benefits of babywearing, especially for young infants. The closeness to mom (or dad) and the motion that mimics being in the womb is comforting to baby. There are many types of baby carriers on the market. I have two slings, a Beco Baby Carrier, and just purchased a BabyBjörn Baby Carrier which will enable baby to face forward. (Amazon.com has the BabyBjörn (original) on sale for $60 with free shipping. I have not seen it for less than $89.99 locally, so that’s a substantial savings.)
Baby Champuru apparently enjoyed being in the Beco, drifting off to sleep after less than one lap around the bon dance circle. Perhaps the music, the movement, and the drums were familiar to her. That’s what lulled her to sleep last summer while she was yet in the womb. Having her in the carrier is a great way for her to participate and experience things that she might otherwise be excluded from. I am looking forward to trying the BabyBjörn, so she can really be a part of the action.
UPDATE: After reading the very helpful comment by Lisa, I did more research and decided to cancel my order for the BabyBjörn. I’m going to try putting Baby Champuru on my back in the Beco Baby Carrier I already have. I’m sure she’ll enjoy the new vantage point – and if not, I’ll look into other alternatives with good lumbar support for the wearer and features that ensure the comfort and safety for baby. Thanks, Lisa, for your feedback!

Special thanks to Derek for shooting the mamarazzi pictures above! (Taken at Hawaii’s Plantation Village bon dance, Waipahu, Hawaii on June 6, 2009.)
