Sunnyside is one of the great things about Hawaii, synonymous with scrumptious cream pies and down home local cooking. This little restaurant in Wahiawa has been a favorite of island residents for decades.

Sunnyside does not specialize in fancy-shmancy pies, covered with flourishes of whipped cream and chocolate shavings. It’s the kind of pie you would expect your grandma to make: no frills, just delicious in its simplicity. It doesn’t overwhelm your taste buds, but utterly satisfies your sweet tooth. Of course, there’s the nostalgia factor as well. While the original owners have retired and sold the business, the pies remain wonderfully unchanged.
Sunnyside pies are my trademark token of appreciation, because I know I would feel loved if someone gifted me with such a delicious treat. Aside from that, it gives me an excuse to get one for myself at the same time — but don’t tell anyone about that!

For your reference (and mine), here’s Sunnyside’s pie menu. All pies are $8.50. As I am not affiliated with Sunnyside, I cannot guarantee that this information will be accurate forever, so please call them directly at (808) 621-7188 for current pricing and to place your order. It’s highly recommended to call a day in advance to place an order for pies, as they do run out rather quickly — especially the always popular cream pies.

I think it was around Christmas ‘07 when a bunch of us from HECO went to check on a couple large customers with photovoltaic solar-electric systems. We stopped at Sunnyside and the first impression I had was, oh yeah Leilehua won the state championship for football – huge photo on the wall. I had their hamburger steak (quite good) and one of our meter guys did the same and had a slice of chocolate cream pie for dessert. Looked so ono I had to go back to the window and order one too. Was it broke da mouth ono? Well, let’s just say that if I can recall this little lunch break on that particular day over a year ago, there must’ve been something quite memorable about it, no?
We had their fried rice on a recent jaunt over to Wahiawa. Was good. I was mad at hubby though because he was supposed to get the fried rice with the hot dog on top like @hulamom said! We ordered it to-go and I didn’t know until we got home. “Where’s the hot dog?” “What?!?” Well, at least we have another reason to go back!
[...] decided to start a “best of Hawaii” series on my blog, beginning with the entry on Sunnyside (Wahiawa, Hawaii). The “best of” ranking is completely biased and arbitrary — based on my own [...]
Wow, Sunnyside got a facelift! Nice! I used to eat here every Saturday after art classes, and oh their pies were amazing – just what you said – no frills and utterly satisfies your sweet tooth.
I did not see chocolate custard pie on the list of pies. Do you still make them? I love your chocolate custard pie. I used to buy 3-4 pies in a day and all gone in one day. When I moved to Las Vegas, I would have family and friends bring me six all the time when they travel here. I haven’t had in a long time and love to have a whole pie now. Do you still make them and what days? Also, if I order from Las Vegas can they be shipped?
