Locked Out!

Baby Champuru in carseat

Sorry, Baby Champuru, your mommy is an idiot.

The sky had never looked so blue.  The clouds had finally lifted.  After days of being cooped up indoors, I decided to go for a stroll in the park today with my mom and Baby Champuru.  Mom’s doctor suggested that she start a walking regimen, so I thought I’d get her started. Since my mom joined us, I drove us to the park.

We had a wonderful time. Talking and admiring the beautiful spring day as we walked, observing how much baby was enjoying the outdoors and taking in the fresh air. The warmth of the late morning sun felt wonderful on my skin.  We walked for about 30 minutes.  When it came time to leave, I opened my car, popped the trunk, started my ignition and turned on the air conditioning to cool off the car for baby. For safety sake, I thought it would be a good idea if I locked the doors so no one could slip in to the passenger side while I was putting baby’s stroller away. I exited the car and without thinking, shut the door.

The moment the door handle left my hand, I had that terrible feeling that I had done something incredibly stupid.  The keys were locked in my car with the engine running.  My only consolation was that baby was not locked inside, too.  If that had happened, I would have just died.

Unfortunately, I have no spare key and just my luck, my cell phone was locked in the car, too.  I ended up seeking help from a maintenance worker (thanks, Roland!) at the park who graciously allowed me to use his cell phone to call my insurance company for roadside assistance.  Despite my soaring stress level, baby drifted peacefully off to sleep, completely oblivious to the fact that her mommy is a complete idiot and was on the verge of a panic attack.  Taking a deep breath and a moment to compose myself, I was able to deal with the situation without freaking out.  However, if it were physically possible, I would’ve kicked myself in the butt. Hard.

One hour and $50 later, my car was unlocked and I was driving home.

Baby Champuru had the time of her life. I think she was just happy to be out of the house for so long. As for my poor mom, she may never go walking with me again.
