![]() Yesterday Baby Champuru went for her three-month well-baby check up. Thankfully, this appointment did not include shots. Looks like that is scheduled for next month. Baby is now weighs 12 lbs. 13 oz. (50% percentile) and is 24-1/4 inches long (81% percentile). Being the always cautious, slightly paranoid mom that I am, I like well-baby checkups. Having the doctor check on her development, growth progress, and general health always leaves me with a good feeling afterward. It reminds me what a blessing it is to have a healthy baby. Thankfully, 13 pounds is not the amount of my weight gain, but rather how heavy Baby Champuru is. (Well, 12 lbs. 13 oz. if you want to be precise.) This is significant because for the first time, I busted out my Beco baby carrier and strapped baby to me and went out for a walk. 13 pounds doesn’t seem very substantial, but walking up the hill in my neighborhood and being sorely out of shape, 13 pounds can get a little weighty. Needless to say, while I was walking, I noticed the extra weight, but it was manageable. It was a few hours after the walk that I really noticed the slightly fatigued muscles making themselves known. Understandably, it’s mostly my back and shoulders that are feeling achy right now. This afternoon was pretty chilly and I was afraid of baby getting too cold, so I cut my walk short. I would say it was probably only about half a mile. Next time out, I will hope for warmer weather so I can go a little farther and extend my walk to about 1.5 miles. ![]() We’ve been having a wet winter this year and it’s perfect weather for one of my comfort food favorites: beef stew. Here’s my recipe: Slow Cooker Beef Stew 1-1/2 to 2 lbs. stew meat (I buy it from Costco) Brown meat in hot skillet with 2 Tbsp. canola oil, then put into crock pot. Layer vegetables in this order: carrots, celery, potatoes, onion (all sliced) and corn. Mix remaining ingredients in a bowl, then pour over vegetables. Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 2 hours and low for 4 hours. Cross post from the Champuru Health & Fitness blog: Tonight, I jump started my fitness regimen with a bang tonight by attending a hip-hop class at 24-Hour Fitness with Jan. Dancing is one of my favorite things to do: Okinawan dancing and, of course, bon dancing. But, hip-hop? That’s uncharted territory for me. I took a hip-hop class with Shari about a hundred years ago with Rocky (remember him, sis?). I didn’t have moves back then and I don’t have them now. My Okinawan dance training has taught me not to move my hips, so the booty-shaking was totally not happening for me. Even though I must have looked like a fish out of water, it didn’t really matter because I’m sure everyone else was concentrating on bustin’ their own moves that they didn’t notice too much. That is, except for the 8-count freestyle that the instructor made us do in groups of three in the middle of the circle. Hoo boy. Talk about getting out of my comfort zone! This was the first time in YEARS since I’ve seen the inside of a gym. It was tons of fun and I hope to do it again. Jan, you with me? BONUS! For you Twitter friends, you’ll appreciate this… one of the first songs the instructor played was this one. Well, the original version, anyway. But so fun to watch @tadasauce singing praises to spam and throwing his “pans in the ayer!” |
