Who is Champuru?

Aloha, I'm Donna, known everywhere on the Internet as "Champuru." I'm a Christian, blissfully wedded to my perfect match (the yang to my yin) of 15 years and a stay-at-home mom to my miracle baby, born in October 2008. Video: Caring for Cloth Diapers

As promised, here is part two of the diaper discussion. In this video, I talk about how I care for my cloth diapers and share some tips with you. Keep in mind, I’m a newbie mom, so I still have a lot to learn — so, if you are an experienced cloth diapering mommy, please share your experiences and opinions on the topic of cloth diapering with us by leaving a comment.

This is a follow up to my initial videolog entry entitled, An Introduction to Cloth Diapers and complements my written entry Cloth Diaper Care.

Baby’s First Thanksgiving

Baby Champuru catching a few winks with Aunty Rene

Yesterday, Baby Champuru had her first real outing: a visit to my in-laws’ house for Thanksgiving dinner, complete with raucous cousins, engaging conversation and jubilant laughter (my favorite thing about my in-laws!), and doting aunties.

Aunties (angels, absolute angels!) took turns holding baby, so hubby and I were able to eat a meal without rushing or having to eat in shifts, as has been the norm.  I forgot how nice it is to have the luxury of actually being able to chew my food and taste it before swallowing.  And boy, what a wonderful meal to savor and enjoy!  Holiday meals at my in-laws’ house is always a veritable feast, replete with copious leftovers for everyone in attendance to take home.

By the way, my broccoli casserole was a hit!  Even the kids liked it.  To me, that’s the greatest compliment, since kids never mince words to be polite and they will tell you to your face if your potluck dish sucked.

Baby Champuru was on her best behavior, as if trying to impress the family.  She peered around curiously as she was passed from aunty to aunty, hardly letting out a peep.  The only time she expressed some displeasure was when her tummy was growling and she was 30 minutes past her feeding time, but even then, it was just a small utter of protest — not the usual wide-mouthed wailing that we are treated to at home.  Aunty Lisa bottle-fed her and she was happy and content after that.

What a good girl!  Her first Thanksgiving and she did so well.  Mommy is so proud of you, Baby Champuru!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We have so much to be thankful for this year.  Of course, one of this year’s greatest blessings is Baby Champuru, born on October 4, 2008. She is the stuff of many years of hoping and dreaming of becoming a mom.  She is a direct result of countless prayers and petitions to the Lord.  Lisa Hoang of Windwardskies Photography, who created our beautiful birth announcements selected this verse for us and it is so appropriate:

“We prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted us what we asked of him.” ~ 1 Samuel 1:27

I still find myself gazing at her with wonder in the quiet moments when she’s asleep.  We have a daughter.  How incredible is that?  After fifteen years of marriage, Hubby and I are parents!  I believe God’s timing is perfect.  We simply needed a little more time than most to be “prepared” for parenthood.

Today, Hubby and I celebrate our fifteenth year of marriage.  That is definitely something to be thankful for.  After seeing the Jon & Kate plus Eight episode featuring the renewal of their vows on Maui, we thought it would be a neat idea to renew ours on our twentieth anniversary.  Baby Champuru will be five by then and she can be our flower girl!

I’m thankful that my family is healthy.  Several friends have lost loved ones this year and it definitely puts things in perspective and reminds me that we must be thankful for and cherish every moment we have with those we care about.

I’m thankful for the opportunity to spend the first six months of Baby Champuru’s life with her as a stay at home mom (SAHM) and for the finances that enable me to do so.  The budget it tight, but somehow we manage.  The Lord provides. :)

Most of all, I’m thankful for Jesus and all that He’s done for me, what He’s brought me through, and where He’s taking me in the future.

Today, be sure to take a moment to count your blessings.  Thanksgiving is not only about food and football. What are you thankful for this year?

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Cloth Diaper Care

I’ve had a few folks ask me about how I care for my cloth diapers. I’ve been meaning to record a vlog entry about it, but as the mom to a newborn, things don’t always go according to schedule.  In the meantime, here’s what I posted on the Hawaii Moms Like Me website.

When changing baby:

- Remove liner from pocket diaper
- Spray liner and diaper with a spray like Bum Genius Odor Remover or Bi-O-Kleen Bac-Out. Contains natural enzymes/live cultures to remove stains and odor from diapers without harsh chemicals and safe for baby.
- Stick the velcro tabs to the pads. These pads are made specifically to keep the velcro in place while it’s going through your wash.
- Put into waterproof laundry bag or dry pail.

How to launder your cloth diapers:

- Empty contents of waterproof laundry bag into your washing machine. Toss laundry bag into the wash with the diapers and cloth wipes.
- Run a cold water pre-wash. If your diapers have been sitting in the pail for a few days, you might want to soak them for a bit. (I wash the diapers every other day, so I don’t have to soak them.)
- Add 1/2 the amount of laundry detergent for a hot water wash with extra rinse. The reason you use only 1/2 a scoop is because you don’t want to get residue built-up on your diapers, which will make them less absorbent and cause leaks. Use a natural laundry detergent like Allens Naturally Laundry powder or liquid. Do not use a fabric softener (also causes residue).
- If you have a clothesline, that is the best way to dry your diapers. The UV rays help to kill any bacteria that may be lingering and also bleach your diapers super white! If you are like me and don’t have that option, you can put them in the dryer. I dry them on MEDIUM heat for 50 minutes. Remember, don’t use a dryer sheet for the same reason you shouldn’t use a fabric softener. (Drying time may vary depending on your dryer and the type of diapers you own.)
