Multi-tasking Mama
Nursing Baby Champuru takes up a good portion of my day: 40 minutes at a time, every 2-3 hours, so I’ve learned to multi-task somewhat while she’s happily quiet and busy. In fact, as I’m typing this entry, she is attached to my boob. I haven’t figured out how to do other things, like cooking or laundry while nursing yet, but I figure at least I can do some work (or play!) on the computer while baby is occupied. This makes me happy. After all, I’m all about making good use of my time!
I have a sling, a peanut shell, and a Beco baby carrier that I have yet to try out. Perhaps using a carrier might help me do more around the house during the day. I’m just a little leery about putting her in a carrier while she’s so small and fragile. Babywearing mamas, did you put your newborn in a carrier right away? Or did you wait a while?
While I’m nursing, I’m also playing Okinawan music for baby to listen to. I’m hoping that this early exposure will nuture a familiarity and love for her culture that will continue throughout her life. (I’ll make her a Toru Yonaha fan yet!) Next, I’ll have to teach her how to dance kachashi!
Champuru Nursing Must-Haves:
The green pillow you see baby lying on is a My Brest Friend nursing pillow that I received as a baby shower gift. Let me tell you, I cannot live without it. When I was learning how to breastfeed in the hospital, the lactation consultant helped me wedge about six pillows all around me, on my lap, behind my back, and on my sides to achieve proper nursing position of the baby. It was frustrating, to say the least, to have to fluff and prop those pillows perfectly every time it was time to feed baby. When I got home, I started using the My Brest Friend pillow and it made it so much easier. The wrap-around pillow is like a platform for baby and a backrest for me, allowing me to keep my arms and shoulders relaxed. When I was nursing in the hospital, I found that my arms, shoulders, and neck were always tense, trying to keep baby in the proper position. With the nursing pillow, both baby and I are comfortable.
Another nursing must-have is a nursing stool. I have the Medela Nursing Stool, which is $25.95 on Amazon.com. I think we paid close to $35 locally. (DOH!)

Who is Champuru?
Aloha, I'm Donna, known everywhere on the Internet as "Champuru." I was born and raised in Hawaii. I'm a Christian. I'm married to my best friend of 18 years, we struggled with infertility and successfully conceived via IVF (and by the grace of God!) in 2008. I resigned from my coveted "secure" government job to be a work-at-home mom to my 3-year-old daughter. Using my degree in Information Technology and the skills obtained in the marketplace, I started my own business. Now, I work from home, taking clients on a part-time basis, working in my PJ's while the little one sleeps. Life isn't always easy, but it's all good.

Oh babywearing makes life so much easier once you get the hang of it! With #3 I started with the sling and it became my best friend. I put her in it as soon as we got out of the hospital and she loved it. She practically lived in. Frees up your hands and you get things done. I never tried nursing in it but I’m sure it’ll keep you nice and concealed. Baby #3 is quite the nosey one and refuses to be covered by anything. Even a nursing cover. UGH! So annoying so I either go to the corner or I make sure my clothes are hiding my goods
whenever we’re in public. Once she was big enough I tried her out in the Ergo and I’m gonna get good use of that bad boy. I didn’t get the infant insert otherwise I might have forgone the sling altogether. I like her best when she’s on my back b/c I don’t have to worry about bumping her into things while she’s on my front or even burning her bum while I’m cooking. Only thing it’s a bit of a challenge to get her strapped to my back when i’m by my lonesome. I can’t very well ask her to hang on. Lol. And more often than not she falls asleep while I’m wearing her! Good luck. And yes a stool of some sort while nursing is a must!
I started wearing C at 3 days old, just like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/windwardskies/1804900371/in/dateposted/
With T I used the Maya ring sling, starting at 2 weeks (when we were able to take him home). He had reflux so he preferred the cradle carry.
I don’t really think you’re supposed to get anything done in the first month or so of baby’s life- keeping baby happy and both of you healthy is a big enough job!
I used the Maya sling also, and while it took some getting used to it was great for having my hands free and keeping baby close.
And what can I say about “my bestfriend”….that saved me from carpal tunnel! I had started developing a sore wrist from supporting baby’s head, and once I got that it was a blessing!
Yay for multi-tasking…you’re a pro!
HOORAY for babywearing! I can’t say enough good things about babywearing… it’s about the only way I’ve gotten anything done.
I started wearing The Little Empress at 5 days old in a Babyhawk meitai (photo here; entire babywearing set here) and she’s been worn just about every day since. I started nursing her in the meitai around a month old; it took a little getting used to but it really freed me up to do things like, oh, eat. Seven months later, she’s very happy to be worn around the house and out and about. We’ve never used a stroller, only worn her on outings. Total strangers comment about how happy of a baby she is to always be carried.
Keep in mind that your baby might balk at being worn but it’s not necessarily that they don’t like being worn — it could be the carrier and/or position. Some babies may not like certain carriers or the positions that they put them in. My daughter HATED the cradle position that ringslings and some stretchy carriers usually recommend for newborns but was fine with the upright position of the meitai and the stretchy wrap that we used later.
And really, don’t worry about doing ANYTHING other than taking care of your little one. The first few months of my daughter’s life, I fretted about things not getting done so I totally know how you feel. I’m the same way. But in the long run, dirty dishes not getting cleaned right away, blog entries not being typed, etc. mean very little. So long as baby, Mama and Papa are happy, that’s all that matters.
Been following your blog since finding you and discovering we were a week apart in our due dates and now our babies are days apart. You have a great blog BTW! But I wanted to say I’ve been wearing my baby since I could stand too, probably about 1 week or so. She loves it. I mean they are used to being carried around. I use a tube-sling, a Hotslings actually. Also a ring sling. I like variety. I say go for it!
babywearing…omg it’s the best! best for you because you get things done, best for baby because EVERY BABY LOOOVES TO BE CARRIED! with ds i used ssc’s as soon as he was big enough. with dd, i used a sleepywrap from about 7 weeks (i was busy searching for a carrier i would LOVE, not just like). I also use a ring sling for quick errands and a mei tai…the beauty of all of the carriers i use, is that i can use them for ds…he’s getting quite heavy though! i can’t believe how fast time is going by…seems like youwere just pregnant!
As a fellow nursing mama (well my last weaned a little over a year ago) I can say my baby girl my youngest was one who made it so hard on me during the day, she was constantly nursing and when she wasn’t she wanted ot be held so we did the baby wearing and it was absolutely wonderful!!!! I wore her while cooking and cleaning and pretty much all day until shower time LOL. It’s an adjustment but one well worth it for sure.
