Reality Check

At 27 weeks, I have one more week until I head into my last trimester. The past nearly seven months have sped by like a freight train and I can’t believe that in about three months, we will be parents.

Two weekends ago, at the recommendation of a friend, Hubby and I went to Kelsey’s Baby Specialties to start a baby registry. Being first-time parents, it was all quite overwhelming. There’s a product/gadget for everything and it’s hard to determine what are must-haves versus frivolous purchases.

As we walked around the store with a clipboard in hand to jot down our baby wish list, Hubby and I were suddenly hit with the startling realization that soon, very soon, we will have a tiny little person in our care, depending on us for her every need — for the next 18 years. WHOA! Talk about a reality check, right there in the crib section!

It’s been just the two of us for the past 16 years (14 years of marriage), so it will definitely be an adjustment. I still have my moments of uncertainty, when I wonder if I’ll be a good mommy, but with the support of Hubby (who is excellent with kids), my family, friends, and the Lord (help me, please!) I know we’ll fare just fine.

In the meantime, I’ve been spending less time on the computer and more time reading parenting magazines and “what to expect” books about the rest of my pregnancy and preparation for the baby. I’ve been also researching topics such as cloth diapers, breastfeeding, and making our home a baby-safe environment. There’s so much to learn about being a mom, it’s mind-boggling.
