Who is Champuru?

Aloha, I'm Donna, known everywhere on the Internet as "Champuru." Baby Gadget

At my last shopping trip at Motherhood Maternity, I noticed that they had a Prenatal Heart Monitor for sale. Similar to the Doppler monitor that my OB/GYN uses to listen for the baby’s heartbeat, this is the consumer-grade device. It also has the option to record the sounds of the baby’s heartbeat, hiccups, and kicks. The deluxe model also allowed you to speak/sing/play music to the baby and could be used as a white noise/heartbeat sound machine for when the baby is born.

I’m wondering if anyone has purchased such a device and how effective it really is. I would hate to have another incident like at my doctor’s office, when she had a hard time finding the baby’s heartbeat — not because of any problems with the pregnancy, but because the Doppler monitor was malfunctioning. It would give me a heart attack if I brought home the machine and couldn’t hear anything. Besides that, is it worth the investment? Will it be one of those things that is neat in the beginning, but ends up being a useless gadget that collects dust in a closet soon after?

I did not purchase such a device, but I have heard it becomes an addiction to listen to the baby every day. This can be a good or bad thing. People say it’s bad the first time you can’t located the heartbeat yourself. Sometimes the baby is turned away or some other reason. I also heard sometimes these devices are not very good because they are consumer type of products. We used a regular white noise machine, and that was helpful for getting our son to sleep some nights. I think it’s just depends if you can afford to purchase these extra products.

Don’t do it – I’m going for the “useless gadget that collects dust” option. You really don’t want to freak yourself out (again) over nothing. You know baby Champuru is doing fine.. you don’t need this gadget to confirm it.

I see it as “lots to lose (the $$ + possible emotional trauma), very little to gain (again, just confirming what you already know)”

And record? For what?? Unless your husband is deployed to a war zone and you want to play back the baby’s hiccups and kicks to him over the phone, what would you want that for?

i vote for no, it looks cool and sounds like fun but how long would it last, and what would you do with it when your done???

  • my SIL had a doppler gadget…but not the fancy one you’re talking about. her’s just did the dopplar and could record a short clip. that’s it. It was nice to borrow, and it was great to use when i was really paranoid something was wrong with the baby (nothing ever was, just my over active imagination). But as a side effect, it made my 3 minute appointments less exciting because when the doc would say “there’s her heart beat” it was an old trick. =P
not sure if its really worth all that money. maybe try finding one on craigslist??

My sister purchased one that looks very similar. It was difficult to hear the baby over her gurgling stomach and I think she only used it once. I’d pass!

    Don’t buy it!

I bought one. I actually bought the one at Motherhood and we used it enough times to get ourselves really frustrated. We couldn’t hear a thing even in a quiet room!
