Menstruating Placebos

Published by Donna at 8:35 pm under conception / pregnancy

Sorry, I realize that topic title sounds disgusting, but I made you look, right? Don’t worry, it’ll make sense when you read the entry and I promise it’s not as gross as it sounds.

I just dropped off a 5-layer dip, tortilla chips, and a box of cookies & cream ice cream sandwiches at Bible study. Today was my day to provide refreshments for the group, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to enjoy any of it. In fact, my “evening sickness” has prevented me from doing much of anything past the 6 o’clock hour, especially if it involves food.

However, there was one night that I actually ventured out of the house and managed to stay out until almost midnight — and I didn’t suffer any of my usual “evening sickness” symptoms. The night was a low-key hangout session at Mahealani’s house. Since she’s in the neighborhood now, it makes it much easier to get together on the spur of the moment. That night, I discovered Marcona Almonds, chowed down on pita chips with hummus, and indulged in a bowl of my favorite mint chocolate chip ice cream from Dave’s Ice Cream. This, all after 6 pm, which is nothing short of a miracle these days. And, we attribute this freak occurrence entirely to pheromones. According to Mahealani, the scientist, the pheromones that a woman emits when she has her period is known to quell the symptoms of morning sickness in other women around her. (I won’t mention who my placebo happened to be that night.) I didn’t believe it at first, but at the end of the night after I got in my car and drove off, the pukey feeling and gag reflex returned. All in my head, you say? Perhaps, but if so, mind over matter is indeed a powerful thing.

Hmmm, I haven’t heard anything about this and can’t find any info on Google or PubMed (even if I search for “hyperemesis gravidarum” instead of “morning sickness”), but I’m sure it’s a possibility. Hormones — and, by proxy, pheromones — are powerful stuff.

Hee hee, now you’ll have to track all your friends’ cycles and try to hang out with them, at least until your hyperemesis gravidarum settles down!

Wow, that’s pretty interesting stuff….definitely worth taking a further look into! And a definite plus for you and your friends as far as spending more time together before baby *aka attention hog* takes up all your time! :o)

Hi! To my understanding, this research hasn’t hit the U.S. public yet. In fact, it may never…this “experimental” stuff is more commonly studied in Europe. Kinda like Splenda…

Documented or not, it worked for you! That’s all that matters! It must have been heavenly for you to be able to eat and enjoy.
