5 lbs. less
I weighed myself this morning and found that I had lost 5 pounds.
Normally, this would be cause for fanfare and great rejoicing, but I’m pregnant and I’m supposed to be gaining weight, not losing it. I suspect that this weight loss has much to do with the fact that I have lost a good portion of my appetite as of late. My flavor of morning sickness works in reverse; with me feeling pretty good in the morning and lunch hours, but steadily declining in appetite as the day wears on. By dinnertime, I am lucky if I can eat half an orange for dinner. Tonight I had a bottle of chocolate organic soy milk for dinner. Unfortunately, my appetite isn’t huge in the morning either. I estimate it’s about half of what it used to be, but at least my gag reflex usually doesn’t activate itself until the PM hours.
I still don’t feel nauseated, but I came pretty close to losing my lunch (all over my beautiful white Apple keyboard, mind you) while I was trying to force down an orange as a post-lunch snack. Oddly enough, I had to resort to the same breathing exercises I do at the dentist to prevent my gag reflex when they shove the x-rays into the back of my mouth. Thankfully, it worked.
This persistent dry mouth doesn’t help, either.
Needless to say, I felt quite miserable today. I seriously don’t know how I’m going to survive going back to my regular position at work. I’ve been assigned to a special project for the past couple of months and it’s been pure bliss. It’s been a dream, being able to do something creative and totally different from my normal job. But, it only makes it harder to go back to the daily grind. Let’s just say that my impending doom return has already become the the stuff of my nocturnal torment, which makes me wake up in a cold sweat with my heart racing. And no, I’m not exaggerating. Does anyone have 8 months of sick leave they can donate to me? Pretty please?

I have 800 hours of sick time at work and I never use it; you know I’d give it to you if it’d help.
@Ryan S. You’re a such a dear! The Snowflake thanks you, Uncle Ryan, for your thoughtfulness.
Isn’t Ryan so cute !!
I think you took after me on the gag reflex …haha! isn’t brushing your teeth the pits !??? i would always be gagging over the sink.
I will bring you some ginger. Li Hing Mui, ume candy and that chinese prune candy were my best medicines during pregnancy with Kody.
hang in there, mama!
Hey, someone may as well use the 800 hours of sick time. I’ve called in sick twice in 12 plus years at Kaiser. 800 is the max. the rest just never accrues.
I’ve also over the years given away 24 hours of vacation time to folks who were out sick due to cancer, preterm pregnancy, or an ill family member. I have like 250 hours of that too.
Hang in there. It’s worth it all. (Not just the 9 months before but also the 18+ years after!)
hey girl! I remember those times. What helped me:
-poi
-boiled sweet potatoes (purple kind; no seasoning whatsoever)
-plain brown rice
-stay away from citrus for a while, if you can. Find bland, complex starches.
-warm water
-spirilina tablets (you know, deep sea limu; ‘posed to be good for ya)
Hey Donna, not my own experience (of course) but several other friends of mine also lost weight during the morning sickness phase of their pregnancies. Keep hydrated and you may want to mention it at your check up *smile*
Ginseng is reported to help with the morning sickness. My sister swore by the seasickness wrist bands. Tiny “meals” throughout the day are supposed to help with “evening” morning sickness…dry puffed rice cereal or something similar is good for snacking and keeps the fiber going.
As for the losing weight….ehh…that’s just nature’s way of making up for what she is about to do to your body for the next 8 months or so!
Hang in there, sweetie! You’re going to be just fine!
Hang in there, Donna!
Every pregnancy is different but, in my humble experience of 4 surprise gifts from the Universe, the nausea and weight loss (very common) usually pass after about the 1st trimester. Sips of strong ginger, like Reed’s Ginger Ale, helped me enormously. Like others have suggested, small meals are the way to go. I used to tell myself that it’s just like getting those sore muscles when you first start going to the gym or training for an event, just part of the growth process–except this is the biggest, happiest event ever!
I’m so happy for you and your hubby!!!
