Crackers and 7up

Published by Donna at 10:13 pm under conception / pregnancy

I hate missing a day of posting, but this weekend was almost completely devoted to rest and relaxation. My stomach has been feeling uneasy, the beginnings of morning sickness, an outright misnomer, since it afflicts me basically off-and-on all day and is quelled by a few saltine crackers and a can of 7up. My sleepyhead tendencies have intensified, requiring 8-10 hours of sleep at night and a 1-2 hour nap in the afternoon. If you didn’t know better, you’d think I was trying to sleep through this pregnancy. My already overactive bladder has also gone into overdrive, which makes me wonder if I’ll need to invest in a port-a-potty for my car in a few months.

The uneasy stomach troubles me somewhat, as it has hampered my appetite quite a bit. Although it’s not full-blown nausea, it’s bothersome enough to keep me from eating normal-sized meals. Well, let me qualify that: at least not Donna-sized meals. This might be normal (or even more than normal) to some, but for me, I fear I might be teetering on the brink of starvation here. Let’s use today as an example:

8:00 am: 3 saltine crackers, 2 cups of water
Breakfast at 10:00 am: 3 slices of sweet bread french toast from Zippy’s, bottle of water
Lunch at 3:00 pm: Small scoop of white rice with furikake, 2 eggs sunnyside up
8:00 pm: 3 saltine crackers, 7up, strawberry yogurt
9:30 pm: 1/2 orange

As you can see, my dinner consisted of 3 saltine crackers, 7up and a strawberry yogurt. Not exactly the most nutritionally-packed meal, but it’s all I could make myself eat. I hope the morning sickness doesn’t get much worse than this, as it would undoubtedly render me more useless than I already am.

Oh, I feel for you! All day sickness was what I had. Try and eat small meals — for me, the queasiness was MUCH worse when my stomach was empty. Counterintuitive, yes, especially when your stomach is telling you “Noooo!” Eat whatever you can tolerate. It’s common to lose weight because of lack of eating due to morning sickness.

I also slept an incredible amount during the first few months of my pregnancy. On the weekends, I’d get up, eat, nap for three hours, eat, nap again, repeat. Little babies take lots of energy from Mommy to grow up big and strong!

Donna, it takes a lot to build a baby! You’re body is probably just like “hey, Donna, why are you sharing so much of the good stuff?” Since I have never built a baby before, I can’t say, but I have heard from many, many friends that morning sickness did not effect their health or weight during the pregnancy. Of course, you are much more of a well-read pro at this rate than I am. I just like to tell you that it’s all gonna be okay!

hi donna! i know morning sickness can be hard to deal with. but on the other hand, it’s a good sign that the pregnancy is going well! (and also, that you might be having a girl, although that is an old wives tale). supposedly ginger might help to ease the queasiness. carbonated beverages (like 7up or just carbonated water) helps too, which you are already doing. i know this time is rough, but it doesn’t last forever, and we can certainly bear a bit of uneasiness for the sake of our little ones, right? ;)

i second gg’s comment. At least you know you’re definitely going through the normal stages of pregnancy. Oh the torture we must endure to bring life into the world! =) But don’t worry about your lack of eating and lots of sleeping…your body is working overtime now. it needs all the rest it can get. But I hope the “morning” sickness doesn’t hit you too hard. There were some smells I just couldnt’ stand for a while and would push my queasiness over the edge. hopefully you’ll just have the uneasy stomach and nothing more. hang in there!

Thanks, everyone, for your encouragement! It always helps to hear about what you’ve experienced and how you dealt with it. Thanks for sharing!

I’ll hang in there for the Snowflake! :)
