@Ryan S: It's awesome that you are so vigilant about your diet and exercise for the sake of your health. I have heard too many stories about people with health issues (diabetes and otherwise) who rely on medication and expect it to be the magic bullet and refuse to change their eating/exercise habits. Kudos to you!

@Lisa: Perhaps if you have Blue Cross/Blue Shield (HMSA-like), maybe it'll cover? Nothing like inquiring! You're absolutely right about the chocolate. That would make my life pretty sad, indeed. As for the rice, the program says you must eliminate ALL (even the 1's) on your list to be effective with the detox. DOH!

@William Luu: Unfortunately, it's all types of rice. Even brown rice! And yes, I am mildly lactose intolerant, so I have used soy milk as an alternative in the past. It's pretty yummy! Yes, I'll need to see how accessible all of these alternatives will be over here. When I start my journey, I'll be sure to post my travails. ;)

With regards to rice, did they mention which type of rice(s) to avoid?

My grandma is a diabetic, and has to cut out the normal white rice that everyone buys often and replace it with brown/raw rice. But even that has to be kept at a low level (maybe one meal a day etc).

Over here a lot of people who are lactose intolerent go for the soy milk based products to substitute milk. Eg: Soy-Yogurt, Soy-Cheese. Rye bread is fairly common at bakeries over here. I'm sure there are recipes for it on the internet if you want to look for it.

Don't know how easy/difficult that stuff is to obtain over there though.

I've been wondering if I have mild celiac (gluten) intolerance. I should look into this test! Doubt my ins would cover it though.

Oh and it could be worse- at least you're not sensitive to chocolate!! That was the only thing that saved me when I had to go completely dairy free for a year because of T's allergy. I also tried eliminating eggs and it wasn't too hard.

If I were you I'd probably keep eating the rice though- it's only 1 so you can't have that much of a reaction to it, right? :)

As a diabetic, I have largely had to give up rice in the name of health. I don't like that I had to do it, but on the other hand, it also was largely responsible (along with genetics) for the disease.

I miss it, but not so much that I'd choose to reintegrate it into my diet at the cost of limb, vision, and kidney function.

That said, I sympathize.
