Hanayakara is one of my favorite groups to watch. This multi-talented group is comprised of young girls ranging in age from 6 to 18. Their energy and skill is simply amazing and I am always inspired after watching them perform. This video is just a small glimpse of their performance at the 25th Okinawan Festival (2007) at the Kapiolani Park.

    Hi Champuru

Wish there were more people could see the performance of these young girls. I make the trip to Okinawa every Mother’s Day to see their performance and it’s always a wonderful experience. I know the girls now and they range in age from 4 to 21 with a new girl added every year at the 4 or 5 year old level. Currently fourteen girls performing all over mainland Japan and Okinawa, China and Korea.

If you ever get to Okinawa check their website hanayakara.com to see their schedule. Last April and May, I caught four performances in a three week period including the Mother’s Day performance which requires tickets. They also perform, usually on Saturdays, at San Ye and Justco department stores.

They do have several DVD’s out but they are in short supply. You may be able to get them from the website. Prior to 2006 they were seen on VHS tape and the tapes go back to 2000 and very hard to find but if you enjoy Okinawan culture, music and dance they are worth the effort to collect them.

Tell everyone you know about this group and check them out on UTube as there are quite a few video clips there.
