Rissho Kosei Kai is definitely one of my favorite bon dances of the season — and not just because our music/dance group (Ukwanshin) takes the lead on the Okinawan numbers! They also have the best selection of food of any other bon dance I’ve attended — bar none. Check out the vlog and see why the champuru bon dance posse looks forward to RKK each year. (RT: 3 min 32 sec)

By the way… I’m working on a longer version of this vlog for the benefit of the bon dance posse. Nearly done, but I need to head to bed now — especially since I have to wake up early to get my second Ganirelix injection from the Hubs before he leaves for work. For now, enjoy the condensed version!

Awesome, awesome video Donna! I have some footage as well but I like the way you professionally edit. It was nice meeting Shari, your Dad (I was behind him last night in the circle) and your husband. My niele daughter actually asked “Keet” if he was really your brother, lol! Your Dad told me, “Don’t watch me, watch her (you - sensei)” as I was trying to learn the finer intricacies of Ashimiji Bushi. Eh dat Kamu one lucky bugga no? ;) We are so blessed to have your dance troupe and the Okinawan shamisen/taiko share your talents with us. It is so encouraging to see the youth in our Palisades community (my daughter and her friends) get so excited about their culture. Last night we even had a few members from our church who had attended a graduation party with us walk up to RKK to partake in the festivities and get in touch with their heritage. Hmmm da guy way in the background doing the Tanko Bushi looks familiar.

Mark from Hawaii: It was great to see you! I’m glad you and the family were able to make it out in time and that you didn’t miss too much of the bon dance! Yes, Keith told me about the encounter with your daughter and he said he replied, “yes, she’s my baby sister!” The funny thing is that when we have performed Okinawan dance together, we tend to be paired as an onstage couple. And, when our dance troupe went to Okinawa, shopkeepers asked Keith if I was his “okusan” (wife) and of course, he said “yes!” haha (Good thing Hubby isn’t the jealous type!)

Joy: Thanks, Joy! The background music was actually from a CD that I bought in Okinawa of eisa music. I love the heishi (spirited yelling) in the background.

Bri: Thanks for watching! Bon dances are a blast! If you make it to Hawaii during the summer months, let me know and we’ll take you to one!

Sorry I missed that one since it seems both you and Shari think it’s the best one of the season (as you know I was in K.C.). When/where are you folks going again?
