What the clerk did was excellent customer service. Unfortunately he did not know that the deactivation process would not have harmed your credit cards. Yeah it's magnetic...sort of. It also has a tiny "tuning fork" in the tag that is the real activation. Probably way too much information. You can always go on EBay and buy a tag remover and deactivation scanner.
