Mobloggin’

Rush Hour Observation: A Mercedes owner with a sense of humor.
Note the vanity plate: LMFA0
My 2-year contract expired with Verizon Wireless on May 9, 2007, which meant that I was eligible for a phone upgrade at a “discount.” I knew I wanted to get a SmartPhone/PDA this time, but wasn’t sure which model would suit my needs. Posting a plea for advice on HawaiiThreads.com, I received some sage counsel from none other than Ryan, who is doing pretty much what I want to do — but on a much larger scale. If the price point was fair, I decided that I would get the Palm Treo 700p. Luckily, with my corporate discount and a $150 rebate, I was able to score the device for about $250. (If you got yours for cheaper, please don’t tell me. I hate feeling ripped off.)
So, you’ll be seeing more of these kinds of random, spontaneous shots on my blog from now on and more Twitter updates, too. (Which can also be found on the right sidebar under the “What I’m doing” heading.) I feel so connected!

Yay! I love the 700p. So much so that I’m hesitating on my initial vow to secure an iPhone the moment it comes off the assembly lines. I do too much with the Treo!
With Missing Sync, it syncs nicely with my Mac. I love the simplicity and intuitive Palm OS (now ACCESS), and I love the various applications you can use on it. The only one I can’t live without so far is Snappermail for POP/IMAP e-mail… though the Gmail Java applet is pretty snazzy, too.
Yay for moblogging! Keep in mind, you can moblog by e-mail to Flickr, Vox, and other services. Whenever I post a photo direct from my Treo, I just CC it everywhere!
Ryan: I’m having trouble posting directly to my blog, however. It posted the image as gibberish, so my workaround is the “Flickr to Blog” posting via e-mail. I would prefer posting direct to champuru.net, since I tend not to like the way Flickr puts so much extraneous code in there when posting to my blog. And, what if (heaven forbid) Flickr goes away or I *gasp* decide to close my Pro account? Any ideas?
Heh Heh Heh.
Are you ready for this?
First you create a 5up3r s3cr3t email address with your provider, say ch4mpuruK4m@champuru.net.
Then using your providers cron facility, you whip up a quick python script that checks periodically, and explodes out attached files that come from your phone. When it detects such an attachment, you have it copy/move it to your a “pending” directory.
Then you have another process that periodically checks that directory and knows how to generate a post, and does so using the appropriate SQL insert commands; and moves the file from the pending dir to a more permament place.
Or if thats excessive, I’d be suprised if someone didnt already have a plugin that handles camera phone mails.
OMG
I guess someone at the DMV isn’t hip on ‘Net acronyms…
BTW, does Opera Mini work on the Treo? There’s no version for my ancient Clie, but it does work well on my otherwise piece of junque Samsung a920… worth a look.
woo! congrats on joining the club! Do yourself a favor and keep an eye on Treocentral.com and Treanauts.com. Lots of Treo news there!
oops.. Treonauts.com.
forgive this naive duh netacronymer ..wat dat mean?? am i showing my age?? luv, mom
Derek: Did all of that (well, something similar to that, but achieves the same end)… it just doesn’t handle the JPG’s well. I can post text to my site from the Treo, but it has some issues converting the gobbledygook to an actual picture. I guess I’ll have to do a little more research. Surely someone in the world is using a Verizon Wireless camfone to post to Wordpress!
Ryan S: I’ll have to do some research on Opera Mini. Will let you know if it is supported.
Bri: Dangerous links!! I got ‘em bookmarked! Thanks for the info!
Lindy: What’s a netacronymer?
*hugs*
Do you have a sample of the “gobbledygook” ? it probably just needs a content type line; or similar MIME identifier tacked on.
