Fickle net connection
My cable connection has been pretty fickle as of late. Without warning, the cable light on my modem will decide to flee the country or disguise itself as a Christmas tree light, blinking incessantly. Either scenario is bad news for me, because that means my Internet connection has just gone south.
Whenever I call Oceanic to report a problem, they tell me that there are no outages in the area and we go through the rigamarole of troubleshooting the darned thing, which is basically all the steps I took PRIOR to calling them anyway. Then, they offer to schedule a tech for me — two weeks from now.
Do you realize what kind of panic would befall me if I couldn’t connect to the Internet for two weeks?!
Then, mysteriously, the light goes solid again and suddenly, we’re back in business. Weird stuff. Even as I type this, I wonder if my fleeting connection will abruptly crap out on me and render me unable to post this entry.
Perhaps I should click “Publish” now before I will be forced to pull my hair out in a net-less frustration.

Dont bother calling. Just yank the POS modem and drag its sorry butt down to the nearest Oceanic Office and demand a new one. They are pretty accommodating when you tell them the problem of it dropping out randomly for 5min at a time. I’m on my 3rd POS modem in 3 years now. The one before that lasted nearly 10 years.
Hey Sis at my parents house our modem was doing the same thing…we put up with the cable blinking like a xmas tree light for 2 weeks, and I told my brother we need to call to see what was wrong…but me and my mom just ended up taking it in to oceanic, and they gave us a new one…and how it’s working just fine…hehe
I took my cable modem to Oceanic today and it seems to be working fine so far. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. That’s the second cable modem that I’ve switched out in a year!
I’ve actually had to have Oceanic come out before to work on the cable modem here; it was so bad at one point that they had to stop billing me until they sent someone here to fix it.
I wish there was a reasonable (price and performance) alternative to cable here. I could deal with cutting my about $100/month bill between cable modem, cell phone, and EVDO.
[...] to Oceanic to swap out my ailing cable modem with a new one: the third Webstar in two years. The last one lasted one day short of a month. Not a very good track record, if you ask me. I don’t know [...]
