Dry Spells

Published by Donna under daily

Content flows in waves around here. As you saw with the influx of several videolog entries in the span of a few days, I felt particularly inspired during the holidays. Truthfully, inspiration and content flows when time is ample — such as in the case of 3 and 4-day weekends. Oh, gloriously long weekends, how I cherish them so!

During the work week, it seems that the creative side of my brain goes into hibernation, so as not to concern itself with the more mundane details of life, conserving its energy for the wonderful weekends.

I recall hearing a sermon in which a pastor lamented about people who “live for the weekends” and how everyday is full of possibilities and opportunities. Of course, I felt the long, bony finger of conviction pointing in my direction as he spoke. In my defense, I don’t feel as though I cease to live Monday through Friday; it’s just having to spend 40+ hours at the office pales in comparison to the delectable freedom of a weekend.

Another 3-day weekend is coming up. I wonder what exciting things will transpire, aching to be captured in pixels?

Karaoke Madness

Published by Donna under tomodachi, vlog

We had the pleasure of going out for a fun-filled evening of karaoke with Mahealani, her new husband Eric, and his family from New Jersey. As karaoke newbies, I think they did fabulously. Here’s a 2 minute vlog entry to show you how we do karaoke in Hawaii. Watch scenes from our January 2, 2007 karaoke night in champuru vlog #6. Click the PLAY button to watch.

Not another resolutions meme

Published by Donna under meme

I’ve been delinquent on my Friday 5 installments, so what better way to start off the new year fresh with the first Friday 5 of January 2007?

1. What is one healthy food you really, really like?
I love tofu. Cold. Fried. Steamed. In miso soup. In okazu. Prepared in a faux burger. Any way you prepare it, I’ll love it.

2. In what area of your life are you especially well-organized?
I like to be organized (some might call it “anal retentive”) in all areas of my life, but most notably, I am well-organized at work. Being organized brings a contented sense of peace to my soul – and believe me, I’ll do nearly anything to reduce my stress levels at the office.

3. Who is someone you’ve managed to stay in touch with?
My childhood friend Shari, which is nothing short of a miracle since I’m pretty bad at keeping in touch with anybody.

4. What bad habit were you able to break (or what vice were you able to give up), and what was it like going through that change?
Vices? Who has vices?

5. Someone out there, whether you know it or not, wishes he or she were more like you in some way. What is it he or she most likely admires you for?
I don’t think such a person exists, but if he or she did, perhaps they would admire my ability to take a totally mundane topic and turn it into a totally mundane blog/vlog entry! Hey, that’s a skill!

Secret Family Recipe

Published by Donna under culture, vlog

Mom-in-law makes ozoni faithfully every year on new year’s day. It’s a wonderful family tradition.

My Mom doesn’t make ozoni (I guess Okinawans don’t eat that?), so I never learned how to make this traditional Japanese concoction. Today, I asked Mom-in-law to teach me how to make her version of ozoni. She assured me that it was easy, consisting of just a few ingredients but with delicious results.

For posterity, I have created yet another vlog entry to help me remember the steps — because certainly, by next year, this will have faded from my memory and I’d be back at square one again. I’m happy to report that my first attempt at preparing ozoni was quite decent.
