A New Addition
Several of my co-workers purchased the 5-megapixel SD400 shortly after it debuted. With its sleek form factor, it instantly smote me with an acute case of camera envy. I managed to stave it off for a while, convincing myself that my trusty S400 was more than sufficient for my needs. However, once I discovered that the health of my S400 was declining, I decided it was time to start looking for a replacement.
I’ve become somewhat of a Canon-snob, so I didn’t even bother to research other brands. I like the quality of the Sony digital cameras, but I hate the proprietary memory sticks. Besides, I’ve been so happy with my Canon G3, S400, and digi-Rebel that I didn’t think there was any reason to change brands. Stick with the known good, I say.
So, I did some research on the Elph models currently on the market and decided to go with the latest and greatest, the SD550. (Read Steve’s Digicams review.)
I usually don’t buy the latest and greatest anything, normally buying one model below to take advantage of the price break. However, having received an unexpected bonus, I decided that I would treat myself. (With Hubby’s blessing, of course.) Besides, whenever upgrading to a new piece of gadgetry, I expect a significant improvement in features. I didn’t feel that the jump from the 4-megapixel S400 to the 5-megapixel SD400 was much of an improvement. From the S400 to the 7.1-megapixel SD550 — now, that’s a significant jump! Aside from that, the movie feature was a great selling point for me. It is capable of filming movies at 640×480 at 30 fps! That should be some incentive for doing more videoblogging.
The SD550 is a welcomed addition to the Champuru family. I hope to post some photos from this little guy very soon.

My husband just picked one of those up on Tuesday! He’s now become a Cannon-Snob as well, having traded in his EX-Z55…
Can’t wait to see your pics & vids!
My S400 died a few months ago (my surgery to it was unsuccesful)… and I loved it so much, I caved and just bought the S410. Only b/c I couldn’t bear upgrading, and I my supply of CF cards isn’t worth giving up yet.
Have fun w/ your new toy! -t
