Guilty Pleasures

Thank you to those who responded to my plea for help and provided me with the name and number of your favorite handyman. I am always grateful when people take the time to offer me their suggestions and referrals.

We decided that ceiling fans in addition to air conditioning might be a bit over the top for our humble abode. After all, we are trying to save some money, believe it or not. So the ceiling fans were returned to Lowe’s and the store credit was enough to buy 1-1/2 window air conditioning units.

We had an appointment with David for Tuesday afternoon. Luckily, Hubby made it back home in time to meet him while I fought rush hour traffic. David is one of those rare people that can build a rapport with anyone in 10 seconds flat. When I arrived at home, he was already hard at work and I saw his smile beaming at me from across the empty window pane of my den. The A/C unit was already riveted into the frame and he was working on securing the plexiglass over the opening.

There’s something about David that instantly puts you at ease. After he put in a good 4 hours of work, having installed 2 A/C units, it only seemed natural to have him stay for dinner. Like old friends, we swapped dog stories on the patio over Papa John’s pizza and diet Coke. By the end of the evening, I felt as though I had known David for years.

Aside from getting our home improvements accomplished, we had an enjoyable evening with our handyman. :)

Now that the air conditioners installed, running them feels like a guilty pleasure. Even on “energy saver” mode. I’m afraid to see how much the electricity bill will increase as a result. Nevertheless, I’m enjoying the reprieve from the summer humidity.

Hey. I’m curious about how much an electric bill goes up with an AC, too. Could you let us know?

Before I forget… Baseline is $130/month without A/C. Let’s see how much it increases. A/C installed on Tuesday, 8/16/05. Will get back to you!
